The house from 1848 required a careful approach, to renovate the old elements on one hand and combine this with the lifestyle of 2017 on the other. Characteristic of the end result is that the design strengthens the genius loci, or the ‘uniqueness’ of the location, of the farmhouse.
The most important intervention of this renovation is relocating the passage from the office space to the living kitchen to the side at the outer facade. This creates one sightline from front to back through the house, providing light, view, spaciousness and the routing has gained logic!
In the “rear house” a new living kitchen has been realized, where construction took place from scratch. The old oak beams that came from under the ceiling have been treated against woodworm, sanded and oiled. In addition to these historical elements, it is the windows of the old bathroom and toilet that preserve the memories of the past.
The tangible relationship with the garden was a requirement for the residents. Therefore the woodwork of the old frames has been restored, as they offer a beautiful view of the greenery outside. Added to this is a large set of French doors, so that the relationship is not only visual but also physical. Once opened, the boundary between inside and outside blurs.
